As many of you will know, one of our most influential leaders recently passed away suddenly. Bill Powell, partnered by his wife Ochan, worked tirelessly to improve international education, and, in particular, to support schools in including a wider range of students with a more diverse set of learning profiles. Even as we struggle with our sense of loss, this message is not simply one of sadness but of tribute.
The Bill Powell Foundation
There have been, and will be, many richly deserved tributes to Bill's life and work. The remaining founders of NFI have also set up a Foundation in Bill's name to honour his work and to further support the spread of inclusive practises. In response to the many queries as to where donations may be sent in Bill's name, we have created this foundation so that together we may continue Bill's work and support efforts towards inclusion around the world.
We would encourage everyone to share the link to this fundraiser and to visit the Remembering William Powell Facebook page.
We are writing here to answer a question that may have hung in the air since Bill's untimely passing, namely, "Will NFI continue?" Ironically, our final NFI Design Team meeting, a few days before Bill's untimely passing, had focussed in part on the issue of succession, on the next generation of leaders of inclusion, on passing the torch. We had already begun to put plans in place for NFI Phase 2, since we are now way beyond the founding years. Of course, we had no idea how prescient those discussions were.
We can assure all of you who have worked so hard in your schools, with your colleagues, on behalf of your students with different learning profiles, that the vision and work of NFI continues. It will be far harder without Bill, and harder still for Ochan, but we have never shirked hard challenges. We will call on our support team, and we'll regroup in new ways to support each other, and you, as we move forward.
There will be more news from us in the coming months, but, so you can make your plans, all scheduled NFI events will take place, and we remain deeply committed to the vision we shared with Bill. We guess it goes without saying, but Bill would not have wanted it any other way.
Thank you for joining together with us in celebrating Bill's life and working to further his legacy of inclusion.
We send warm regards and we wish you all a really successful school year.
